Introduction
The New Taipei City Library Taishan Branch, designed by A.C.H Architects, is a vital addition to the cultural landscape of the Taishan District in Taiwan. Situated on the 5th floor of a government building, the library serves as a hub for knowledge and community engagement.
Revitalizing the Space
Originally founded 20 years ago, the library faced numerous challenges, including cramped and outdated interiors, inadequate daylighting, and safety concerns. To address these issues, the architects implemented innovative solutions such as app reservation systems and inter-library book sharing. These initiatives not only improved visitor movement but also enhanced accessibility and convenience.
Catering to Diverse Needs
Recognizing the diverse demographics of the district, particularly the significant population of children under 12 years old, the architects prioritized the creation of a welcoming and spacious children’s reading area. This area caters to families and young readers, fostering a love for literature from an early age.
Innovative Design Features
The library boasts an open interior layout designed to meet the evolving needs of modern libraries. By strategically placing furniture and maximizing daylight, the architects created a sense of openness and comfort throughout the space. Unique bookshelf designs, utilizing the high ceilings of the building, not only serve as functional storage but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the library.
Reflecting Local Identity
Inspired by the district’s name, which translates to “Mountain,” the architects incorporated mountainous design concepts into the library’s layout. Wooden open shelving, combined with hollow boards, creates a conceptual woodland beneath a cloudy sky, delineating different areas within the library. The transparent design elements foster a sense of visual unity and encourage interaction among visitors.
Impact and Success
Since its renovation, the New Taipei City Library Taishan Branch has experienced a significant increase in visitors, with the children’s reading area usage surging by more than three times. This success reflects the library’s transformation into a vibrant community space that caters to the diverse needs of its residents.
