Reimagining Space: Gasometer House by 02A | Studio

Nestled on the slopes of Monteverde, along the path leading from Trastevere Station to Villa Pamphili, Gasometer House presented a unique challenge to 02A | Studio. Upon first encounter, the space felt constrained, suffocated by a labyrinth of partitions that obscured its potential. The vision was clear: this house needed liberation. Rooms of uniform size stood devoid of hierarchy or functional cohesion, while a forest of barriers separated the interior from the expansive terrace, dominated by the iconic Gazometro—a testament to industrial heritage.

Opening Up

The essence of the renovation lay in stripping away these barriers, reconnecting the interior with its surroundings. With the exception of the bedroom facing the entrance, all rooms were opened up, inviting natural light and unobstructed views into every corner. The kitchen embraced the curvature of a handcrafted obtuse corner, while sliding panels introduced a dynamic interplay of space in the hallway, study, and living room, blurring the boundaries between areas and allowing for fluid spatial configurations.

Harmonious Fusion

Aesthetic considerations were deeply intertwined with functional interventions, reflecting a collaborative process between architect and client, particularly during the challenges of lockdown. The stylistic approach honored the 1950s heritage of the space, preserving original features such as doors and railings while infusing reinterpretations that captured the spirit of post-war optimism. Pastel hues in the kitchen, wallpaper accents in the bedroom, and the warmth of a fireplace contributed to an atmosphere of vitality and nostalgia.

Fusion of Past and Present

The design narrative seamlessly integrated modern elements alongside industrial remnants, paying homage to the gasometer that loomed over the landscape. From exposed concrete pillars to visible electrical systems, the house embraced its history while embracing contemporary design sensibilities. The result is a dynamic living environment, alive with possibilities and perspectives, inviting exploration and discovery with every visit.

Gasometer House stands as a testament to the transformative power of architectural intervention, where liberation of space leads to a harmonious fusion of past and present, form and function. Through meticulous design and thoughtful curation, 02A | Studio has created a residence that not only honors its heritage but also embraces the spirit of modern living.
