In 2014, when Walmart introduced its Beauty Box subscription service, it offered customers a straightforward deal: Pay $6.98 plus taxes every three months and receive a curated box of beauty products tailored to each season.
For years, customers enjoyed this convenient service until an unexpected issue arose this week.
Several customers took to social media on Tuesday to report that Walmart had charged them for 100 Beauty Boxes instead of just one, resulting in a staggering total of $698 before taxes.
Walmart swiftly acknowledged the error, attributing it to a coding mistake made by a third-party vendor responsible for managing the Beauty Box program.
Tricia Moriarty, a spokeswoman for Walmart, expressed regret over the incident, stating, “Brandshare, the company who operates the Beauty Box program, is working to complete refunds as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and any inconvenience this causes our customers.”
In addition to processing refunds, the retail giant based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has announced additional compensation for affected customers. They will receive $100 Walmart gift cards along with complimentary Beauty Boxes for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. Walmart has already reached out to all customers who were mistakenly overcharged.
Despite these efforts to rectify the situation, some customers remain dissatisfied. One Reddit user, MamaK35, shared a message from Walmart indicating that refunds would appear on billing statements within five to 10 business days. Many others in the thread expressed frustration, especially considering the timing of the overcharge, which occurred at the end of February, just before rent was due for many.
