Walmart’s Mother’s Day Promotion: Free Walmart+ Memberships for New Moms

Walmart is offering a special promotion for mothers expecting to give birth in May, aiming to provide them with a complimentary membership to Walmart+ valued at $98 annually.

The Mother’s Day Giveaway

The retail giant, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, has announced its plan to gift 20,000 free Walmart+ memberships to mothers delivering babies in hospitals nationwide during the month of May, coinciding with Mother’s Day. This initiative, valued at nearly $2 million, is part of a collaboration with the Pampers Hospital Gift Program, which offers gift bags to new mothers.

According to Walmart spokesperson Rachel Nipper, any hospital participating in the Pampers Hospital Gift Program can choose to participate in the Walmart+ Pampers Hospital Gift. Along with the Walmart+ membership, recipients will receive a reusable fabric bag, a sample of six Pampers Sensitive Wipes, and informational materials about newborn care.

Redeeming the Offer

Mothers who receive the Walmart+ membership in their Pampers Hospital Gift can utilize the provided WMT+ QR code and personalized number to redeem their year-long membership. Upon scanning the QR code, recipients can enter the number from their flyer to activate their Walmart+ membership, which will remain valid for one year from activation.

Promotional Campaign

To promote the giveaway, Walmart has enlisted the support of prominent figures such as singer and songwriter Cardi B, comedians and actresses Jenny Slate and Janelle James, and actress Stephanie Beatriz. Each individual featured in the ads is a mother, sharing their insights and advice on motherhood.

Walmart+ vs Amazon Prime

This initiative is part of Walmart’s ongoing efforts to enhance Walmart+, its membership service launched in 2020 to compete with Amazon Prime. Walmart+ members enjoy various benefits, including early access to Black Friday deals during the holiday season, special discounts on streaming service Paramount+, free delivery for online orders, and savings at participating gas stations.

While Walmart does not disclose its exact Walmart+ membership numbers publicly, research suggests that the platform had approximately 11 million members as of July 2022. This figure pales in comparison to the estimated 168 million members subscribed to Amazon Prime by the end of the previous year.
