Redefining Fitness: Het Gym by Kevin Veenhuizen Architects

Introduction

Het Gymlokaal emerges as a unique fitness destination in Amsterdam-Noord, fostering a sense of community and intimacy amidst industrial charm. Transformed by Kevin Veenhuizen Architects, this gym repurposes two units within a former shipyard along the Ij waterfront, accentuating the site’s industrial heritage.

Industrial Heritage

Situated within a concrete shipyard erected in 1957, Het Gymlokaal inherits a rich historical backdrop, named after De Groene Draeckā€”a sailing vessel gifted to Princess Beatrix. Following a transformation in 1995, which introduced steel frameworks for office units, 2021 marked a new chapter with the conversion into a contemporary gym.

Sustainable Design

Embracing sustainability, the gym employs mostly reclaimed building materials. Demolished steel and timber beams find new life in separating floor constructions, while interior window frames, complete with glass, are repurposed to delineate spaces. Plywood fittings complement reused components, accentuating their presence within the design.

Industrial Aesthetic

A newly installed steel bridge connects spaces on the mezzanine level, echoing the industrial aesthetic set by reused spiral stairs and railings. Stripping the interior construction to its bare essentials exposes concrete, steel, and timber elements, while strategically positioned pipes contribute to the desired aesthetic quality.

Central Hangout

At the ground level, a central double-height hangout serves as the heart of the gym. A monolithic bar, adorned with green tiles symbolizing water levels, pays homage to the site’s maritime history. A unique counter design facilitates visitor check-ins, seamlessly integrating with the hangout space.

Tailored Lighting and Acoustics

Each area within Het Gymlokaal boasts a bespoke lighting plan, tailored to its specific function. Serene lighting in the yoga space contrasts with powerful LED installations in the main sports hall. Furthermore, meticulous acoustic planning ensures a tranquil environment, free from noise disturbances.
