Transformation of the Cinema Complex
Mimosa architects undertook the ambitious task of revitalizing the dilapidated former open-air cinema in Prachatice, Czech Republic, transforming it into a modern complex with enhanced sustainability. Originally accommodating 800 seats, the cinema now boasts a more manageable capacity of 350, allowing for the creation of buffer areas between residential buildings and the cinema grounds. Additionally, acoustic measures were implemented to mitigate noise disturbances, while a new connection between the residential complex and the town center was established through Štěpánka’s Park.
Innovative Design Approach
The project involved the demolition of the old cinema buildings and the original projection wall, paving the way for the construction of three new buildings housing essential facilities such as a cash desk, buffet, hygienic facilities, and storage areas. These structures were strategically designed to ensure accessibility for all visitors. The fractured motif of the fencing towards the residential street was preserved and extended to newly built gabion walls, maintaining visual cohesion with the surroundings.
Cinematic Inspirations in Design
Mimosa architects drew inspiration from the world of cinema to inform the design principles of the new complex. The system of film reels guiding the film projector inspired the forms of various architectural elements, including the roof construction controlled by wheels reminiscent of film reels. The textile roofing of the stage and auditorium not only enhances the comfort of performers and audience members but also contributes to the acoustic properties of the cinema, ensuring an immersive viewing experience.
Integration with Surroundings
The design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment, employing materials such as stone and black steel to establish visual continuity with the town’s center. Granite paving and gabion walls echo the architectural motifs found elsewhere in Prachatice, fostering a sense of unity within the community. The roofing solution, characterized by its lightness and flexibility, preserves the open sky overhead while providing protection from the elements during performances.
Cultural Impact
The completion of the Open-Air Cinema project coincided with the finalization of Štěpánka’s Park, resulting in a well-cultivated public space near the town square. Beyond serving as a venue for film screenings, the cinema complex now serves as a hub for cultural events, strengthening the town’s connection to its center and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
