Transforming Hjorthagen: The Evolution of Hjorthagen Sports Hall by AIX Arkitekter

Introduction

Situated in the Gasworks area of Hjorthagen, the Hjorthagen Sports Hall represents a pivotal component of the neighborhood’s ongoing transformation. Commissioned by the Stockholm Sports Administration and the city of Stockholm, AIX Arkitekter embarked on a project in 2015 to construct a modern sports facility bridging the old and new districts of Hjorthagen.

Architectural Integration

The ground floor of the sports hall seamlessly integrates with Gasverksvägen, offering expansive glazing to the north and west. This design choice fosters connectivity with the surrounding urban fabric, enhancing the sense of openness and accessibility. The brick facades echo the architectural vernacular of neighboring structures, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic.

Vibrant Community Hub

Designed to be more than just a sports facility, the hall features amenities such as public stands, a cafeteria, and multipurpose training rooms. These spaces serve as catalysts for community engagement, enriching the cultural fabric of Hjorthagen and fostering social interaction among residents.

Artistic Expression

An artistic highlight of the hall is the installation “Genomsyn” (See-through) by Anna Nordquist Andersson, adorning both the side facade and interior. Symbolizing inclusivity and transparency, this artwork aligns with the architectural vision of integrating the hall with its urban surroundings.

Environmental Sustainability

Incorporating sustainable features, the hall boasts solar panels on its green roof, contributing to its energy self-sufficiency. Furthermore, mindful of its proximity to the National Park, the design prioritizes local wildlife conservation. Climbing plants adorn the facades, while bat and bird nests provide habitats for diverse species.

Certification and Recognition

As a testament to its environmental consciousness, the Hjorthagen Sports Hall has been certified as a gold-grade environmental building by the Swedish Green Building organization. This recognition underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability and ecological stewardship.

Conclusion

The Hjorthagen Sports Hall stands as a symbol of urban revitalization and environmental responsibility. Through thoughtful design and innovative solutions, AIX Arkitekter has created more than just a sports facility—it is a dynamic community hub that harmoniously blends modernity with the rich heritage of Hjorthagen.
